People
The current Clinical Teaching Fellows in Aberdeen are Dr Kristina High, Specialist Trainee in Anaesthetics, Dr Partha Gandopadhyay, Specialist Trainee in Psychiatry (both with us until August 2010) and Dr Micheal Leggat has recently joined us for two years. Dr Helen McFerran, is the current FY2 Clinical Teaching Fellow (with us until August 2010 also).
Inverness has recently welcomed Dr Kelly Boyd and Dr Jane Hume as Clinical Teaching Fellows (2009-2011).
In addition, Dr Heather Kirk, Specialist Trainee in Neurosurgery, is with us for two years. Heather is training in New Zealand but did her MBChB in Aberdeen.
Events
The 2009-10 Medical Education Special Interest Group (Med-SIG) events were:
"Supporting trainees and students in difficulty": Jointly delivered by University of Aberdeen and NES North Deanery, lead by Dr Wendy Watson.
"The Conscientiousness Index" GuestSpeaker: Professor John McLauchlin, Durham Medical School.
All clinical and academic staff, medical and dental students are welcome to Med-SIG events. Reminders are circulated by email nearer the time.
Suggestions for 2010-11 speakers are welcome.
Conferences and meetings
Dr Jennifer Cleland was the invited speaker at the inagural Glasgow Conference of Educational Scholarship, Friday 18th June 2010.
Aberdeen will be well represented at ASME and AMEE 2010. Accepted presentations include: using health services research models to inform medical education research; barriers to giving formative feedback using the Mini-CEX, student attitudes towards illness and self-care in medical students and doctors, and careers choices.
Work carried out by the Inverness Teaching Fellows, Drs Jane Hume and Kelly Boyd, and from 2009 Teaching Development Awards projects (see Innovations), will be presented at the 10th Annual Scottish Clinical Skills Network Conference in Dundee in September 2010.
Other
Dr Jennifer Cleland, lead for medical education research, will succeed Professor Trudie Roberts, Leeds, as Elected Chair of the Association for the Study of Medical Education (ASME) Research Group with effect from September 2010.
