In Memory of Dr Allan Macartney

TThe University of Aberdeen has introduced a new scholarship in honour of the late Dr Allan Macartney who was Rector of the University until his sudden and untimely death on 25 August 1998.
The Dr Allan Macartney Scholarship will help an undergraduate student access a place at the University of Aberdeen when, under other circumstances, he or she might be unable to afford to do so. Funding for the Scholarship has been provided both by Dr Macartney’s family and members of University staff.
University Principal, C Duncan Rice said: “I cannot think of a more appropriate way to honour the memory of a man who was a model for us all in his devotion to students who could not have asked for a more dedicated, energetic and compassionate Rector.
“Allan Macartney was deeply respected by and popular with the whole University community and his sudden death was not only an enormous shock to his family, friends and colleagues but a huge loss to Scotland, and to Europe where he played such an important part.
“I am confident he would have approved our decision to designate it an access scholarship to provide financial help to a student who might otherwise not be able to enter and benefit from Higher Education.”
The first student to hold the Dr Allan Macartney Scholarship will be appointed in September 2000.
