Pelagic fisheries in Scotland (UK) and Galicia (Spain): observer studies to collect fishery data and monitor by-catches

(Research supported by DG Fisheries, CEC)

SUMMARY

This project, running from January to August 2001 collected data on by-catches and discards in pelagic trawling fisheries in Scotland and offshore trawling fisheries in Galicia. Of particular interest was the incidence of by-catches of cetaceans - of which none were observed during sampled trips in Scotland. The by-catch illustrated (left) is a shark. The project organizers and observers would like to thank the various fishermen who have taken observers on-board for their assistance with data collection.

All fishery and sightings data collected in Galicia has been entered into a GIS and on-line maps as well as further information on project work in Galicia can be found here.
