The course timetable

Weather permitting we plan the following:

Friday
evening: Welcome by the Director of Malham Tarn Field Centre.
Talk on aims/course content/safety/project work.
Arrange groups.
Talk on map reading (Martyn Gorman)

Saturday
morning: Visit freshwater habitats; discuss collection techniques and transect and distance sampling; collect animals for study.

afternoon: Sort and view animals. Visit bog pools; collect, sort and view animals. Set pitfall and water traps. Everyone sets mammal traps. 1st group put out mammal traps.
evening: Talk on project planning (Mark Young)

Sunday
early morning: 2nd group carry out CBC

morning: 1st group visit mammal traps and join rest. All others visit woods/fens/raised bog. Discuss sampling techniques and collect animals.

afternoon: Sort and view animals
Initial project discussions with staff

evening: Talk on analysing and exploring data (Mark Young)


Monday
early morning: 3rd group carry out CBC (and so on, each day)

morning: 2nd group visit mammal traps (and so on, each day)
All groups do projects

evening: Free evening!

Tuesday
As for Monday

evening: Talk on giving a seminar. (Sue Lewis)

Wednesday
As for Monday

evening: Briefing on Thursday’s arrangements. (Martyn and Mark)

Thursday

Early morning: 1st group do CBC

9.00-11.00: 5th (and 1st) group collect mammal traps. Rest pack kit.

11.00-11.30: Briefing on walk.

11.30-4.00: Walk exploring land farms, local history and vegetation types (wellies are NOT suitable, wear stout walking shoes/boots).

5.00-6.15/ Seminars and discussion

Friday
9.30 am: Disperse for a rest!
