How to get to Malham & What to bring with you

Travel to and from Malham Tarn

Malham Tarn Field Centre is located near Settle in North Yorkshire on Ordnance Survey Sheet No 98 at SD 895 673

We intend to provide a coach from Aberdeen to Malham, leaving from in front of the Zoology Building at 9.00 am on Friday 12th June 2009. This will arrive at Malham Tarn about 4.00 pm and if anyone is travelling separately they should aim to arrive about then. If you do not intend to travel to Malham in the coach you must indicate this clearly to the course team.

We will also provide a coach back from Malham to Aberdeen on 18th June 2009 but anticipate that some of you will choose to travel to different destinations. So that we can book the right sized coach, please indicate whether you will be travelling with us or independently.

There is very little parking at Malham and so the Field Centre discourage you from bringing a car with you for the duration of the course.

What should you bring?

The attached information sheet will help you plan what to bring with you. Remember that Malham is in the Pennines and so the weather may be wet and cold (although it is often dry and warm!). You must come prepared, with warm clothes and waterproofs. Bring a day-sack to carry spare clothes and food. You will certainly need walking boots or tough waterproof shoes, for we include some rough walking; and Wellington boots are also very useful, for we will be doing some sampling in streams and lakes. The Field Centre have some wellies and waterproofs available for hire, but they do not guarantee to have your exact size! Come prepared.

We will have basic first aid material with us but you will find it useful to have suntan cream and midge repellent with you. Who knows what the weather will bring?

The area is extremely photogenic and so you might want to bring along your camera.

The Centre has a shop which stocks sweets, drinks, postcards and film but there is no bank available. Bring sufficient money for excursions to the pub in the evenings or you will be very envious of your richer class-mates.

Scientific equipment

We provide almost all you will need but you must have a field notebook and pencil available and a pair of medium forceps, a mounted needle (a ‘seeker’) and hand lens will be very useful. Pocket calculators will also help, although we also provide computers, with statistical software. An empty computer disk or data-stick would also be very useful.

What do you eat?

When we send in the confirmatory course booking to Malham, we have to list any dietary preferences. If you are vegetarian, vegan or have any other dietary preferences please make sure that you put these on the registration form. If in doubt please speak to a member of the course team.

Medical conditions

So that we may act appropriately, please make sure that we know if you have any medical conditions (such as asthma, epilepsy or allergies). These will remain confidential to the course team.

In case of an emergency

In the very unlikely event of accident, we may need to contact your family or partner. Please make sure you put a suitable contact on the registration form for us.
