UKRI Open Access Policy

Open Research

The University of Aberdeen is committed to open research, ensuring there are no barriers to sharing knowledge.

UKRI Open Access Policy

The UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) open access policy applies from the following dates:

  • in-scope research articles submitted for publication on or after 1 April 2022
  • in-scope monographs, book chapters and edited collections published on or after 1 January 2024

It is researchers’ responsibility to publish any outputs funded by UKRI open access in compliance with UKRI policy. All outputs must include details of the funding that supported the research and, if applicable, a statement on how the underlying research materials – such as data, samples or models – can be accessed.

Articles submitted for publication prior to 2022 follow the previous UKRI open access policy.

The nine UKRI research councils are:

  • Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC)
  • Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC)
  • Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)
  • Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)
  • Innovate UK
  • Medical Research Council (MRC)
  • Natural Environment Research Council (NERC)
  • Research England
  • Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC)
