iTunes can be used as a media player or as a library for all you favourite podcasts. The library Media Players web page provides information on how to select iTunes as your default player. The advantage of using iTunes or the latest version of QuickTime to play podcasts is that you will be able to listen, see embedded images, and link to relevant URLs by playing enhanced m4a files.

If you are interested in receiving new AudioPODs and episodes of LibCast magazine automatically as soon as they are published, you can use the iTunes Store to arrange a free subscription. iTunes will look for new podcasts at regular intervals and deliver them to your computer. Remember 'subscribe' doesn't mean you have to pay - they are all free of charge!

How to subscribe to library AudioPODs and LibCast

PLEASE NOTE: technical difficulties are preventing subscription to our podcasts via iTunes. The problem is currently under investigation (June 2009).

1. Open iTunes if it is installed on your computer, or go to www.apple.com/itunes/download/ and download the relevant program.
2. On iTunes click on the link to the iTunes Store located in the left hand pane.
3. Click on the link to Podcasts located in the iTunes Store box towards the top left hand side of the screen. You may have to wait a short time for the Podcasts page to open.
4. In the small Search iTunes Store search box located at the extreme top right hand side of the page, type University of Aberdeen.
5. A page displaying icons and information about library AudioPODs and LibCast will open.
   
6. Click on the Subscribe button for the series of your choice.
7. A dialogue box will open asking you if you "Are sure you want to subscribe to ...", click on the Subscribe button.
8. This action will download the complete series of AudioPODs or LibCast and all future episodes.
9. All subscription podcasts are added to the Podcasts category of your LIBRARY.
10. NOTE: to download a single episode, click on the relevant Get Episode button.

How to set an automatic search for new episodes in your subscription podcasts

1. Open iTunes and select the Podcasts category within your iTunes LIBRARY.
2. At the bottom of the Podcasts page click on the Settings ... button.
3. A new window should open on the Podcasts tab.
4. Select the interval at which you want to check for new episodes from the Check for new episodes drop-down menu - the most frequent interval for automatic searching is every hour and the longest, every week.
   Select the appropriate settings from the 'When new episodes are available ..' and Keep categories.
   Then click OK.

How to play podcasts from your iTunes Library

1. Open iTunes and select the Podcasts category within your iTunes LIBRARY.
2. To view a list of episodes, click on the ► arrow for the series of your choice.
3. To listen to a podcast, click on a title to highlight the line, then scroll to the top of the page and click on the ► arrow to play the audiofile. Adjust the volume using the sliding bar.
4. To view the images embedded in a podcast, scroll down to the bottom left hand side of the page to the Now playing box.
   To enlarge an image displayed in the box, left click on the image once and it will open in large format in a separate window.
   If there is no box click on the ▲ arrow located in the small toolbar at the bottom left hand side of the page. This action opens the Now playing box. Click on the image to open it in a larger format.

How to unsubscribe from a library podcast series

1. Open iTunes and select the Podcasts category within your iTunes LIBRARY.
2. Click on the line for the podcast series you wish to discontinue.
3. Click on the Unsubscribe button located at the bottom left hand side of the page.
4. The podcast series will remain in your ITunes Library but you will not automatically receive new episodes.
5. To remove a podcast from your library, right click your mouse on the appropriate line and select Delete from the drop down list.
6. A dialogue box will open asking you " If you are sure you want to remove the selected podcasts from your ITunes library?..."
   Click on the Remove button and choose to either Keep Files or Move to Recycle Bin.

How to load a podcast onto your mp3 player

1. Connect your mp3 player to your computer.
2. Select the iPod icon when it appears in iTunes.
3. Click the Podcasts tab, then do one of the following:
   • To automatically update your iPod with all the podcasts in your podcasts playlist - select Sync.
   • To load podcasts manually - deselect Sync, drag podcasts from your playlist and drop into the iPod icon in the iTunes window.
