Walk-in users have access to many of the University of Aberdeen Library’s extensive range of full-text and bibliographic databases. Access to these databases is subject to strict licensing permissions and copyright law and not all are available to non-members of the University. However, significant databases and electronic journals are available to Walk-In Users and these are organised under the headings below.
Some of the databases link to another database for the full-text. This is done by clicking on the SFX or Link button. It may be that the database that has that content will not give you permission to access the item. For example if you see the link to Swetswise, you do not have permission to use this provider.
Help screens are available on all databases and many of the resources themselves have tutorials on getting the most out of them. We recommend you use these together with the brief tips provided below. Library staff are unable to give assistance except at very quiet times.
Aberdeen City Libraries subscribe to a number of premium databases, the majority of which are not accessible in the University of Aberdeen Library. The databases cover a wide variety of subject areas including business, family history, learning to drive, general reference, newspapers and much, much more. All can be accessed free of charge. You can use all of the databases in the Central Library, Rosemount Viaduct. Some are also available in your local community library. If you are a member of Aberdeen City Libraries, many of the databases can also be used 24/7 from anywhere with an internet connection by simply entering your library card number - just follow the link below for more information and a list of all the databases.

"Walk-In User Service" means the set of electronic resources made lawfully available for use on designated PCs specified for access by Walk-In Users. Where the term "Service" is used in these Terms and Conditions, it means the "Walk-In User Service"
"Walk-In User" means any person who is not a currently registered student, staff member or employee of the University and who has been granted access to the University network under the registration procedures which govern the Walk-In User Service. Where the term "User" or "Users" is used in these Terms and Conditions, it means a "Walk-In User".
2.1 Users may only access the Service from specific PCs designated for that purpose in Library, Special Collections and Museums sites.
2.2 Users must not damage hardware, or attempt to interfere with software or other applications running on the Walk-In User PC, in any way. Users are permitted to insert a USB memory stick into the USB port on the Walk-In User PC but are under a binding obligation to ensure that it is completely free from viruses or any other entity which could damage hardware and software, or otherwise compromise the operation of the hardware and software, or the network in any way. Printing facilities are not provided.
2.3 Users must not divulge usernames or passwords to any other person while using the Service; nor should they allow any other person to use the Walk-In User PC when it is booked in their name; nor should they use the Service to perform searches on behalf of any other person.
2.4 Users may access only the resources made available on Walk-In User Service PCs and must not attempt to access any other networked resource, the online library catalogue, the Internet or any other service or application from designated Walk-In User PCs
2.5 Users must only access resources on the Walk-In User Service for personal, non-commercial and educational use; any use of resources for commercial purposes or activities is strictly forbidden.
2.6 Users wishing to book the Service after a first visit should produce their Registration Form as proof of registration for the Service.
2.7 While Library, Special Collections and Museums will take reasonable steps to ensure availability of the Service, Library, Special Collections and Museums accepts no liability whatsoever if the Service is unavailable for any reason.
3.1 Users agree to the processing of their personal data under the terms of the Data Protection Act 1998 for the purposes of administering the Walk-In User Service. Specifically, Users agree that personal data:
- may be processed by Library, Special Collections and Museums for the purposes of ensuring lawful use of the Service
- may be used for management purposes, for example, to monitor the Service with a view to improving or enhancing the Service
- may be used by Library, Special Collections and Museums in ways appropriate to maximising use of the service (e.g. to advertise service developments; to cancel reservations on the Service in the event that it may be unavailable for technical reasons etc)
4.1 Users of the Service agree to be bound by all provisions contained in relevant laws; the licences governing use of particular electronic resources; all relevant University Regulations or Conditions of Use; and all Codes affecting use of the Service, the University computer network and the JANET network. These include (but are not necessarily limited to) the following: the Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988; the Computer Misuse Act 1990; the Data Protection Act 1998; the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations, SI 2003, No 2426; the Human Rights Act 1998; the Telecommunications (Lawful Business Practice) (Interception of Communications) Regulations, SI 2000, No 2699; individual licences for each of the resources available on the Walk-In User Service; the Library Regulations of the University of Aberdeen; the Conditions for Using IT Facilities of the University of Aberdeen; the JANET (Joint Academic Network) Acceptable Use Policy: the CHEST Code of Conduct. Where appropriate, it is the responsibility of each individual User to familiarise themselves with the requirements of statutory enactments.
5.1 Users of the Walk-In Service agree that in accordance with its normal policies, the University reserves the right to monitor communications and networked activity on designated Walk-In User PCs, to the extent permitted by United Kingdom law. This is to ensure compliance with the University's own legal obligations. The relevant legal framework permits the interception and recording of network traffic and transactions, without consent, for a variety of reasons - such as to ensure regulatory compliance; for the detection of criminal activity or unauthorised use. Where there is evidence of criminal activity, misconduct of any kind, unauthorised use, or unlawful use of licensed electronic resources, the University reserves the right to investigate any such incident by all lawful means available to it. In the case of suspected criminal activity, the University may disclose personal and other information to the Police or to other appropriate enforcement agencies, to the extent permitted by law. The University reserves the right to inform the relevant authorities of any suspected criminal activity.
5.2 Any User must log out of the Service immediately when requested to do so by a member of staff authorised to supervise it; or by any member of staff acting in place of the Supervisor; or by any senior member of Library, Special Collections and Museums staff.
5.3 Library, Special Collections and Museums reserves the right to suspend, terminate or otherwise bring to an end access to the Service granted to a registered User of the Service as a result of a breach of any of these Terms and Conditions, if necessary without notice.
5.4 Library, Special Collections and Museums reserves the right to suspend, terminate or otherwise bring to an end access to the Service granted to a registered User of the Service as a result of a breach of any other failure by a registered User to observe rules and regulations relating to acceptable conduct in library sites as enumerated in the Library Regulations.
5.5 In the event of any breach of these Terms and Conditions by a User, where the User is at fault or responsible, the User agrees to indemnify the University of Aberdeen for any and all costs incurred by the University in having to deal with any breach of these Terms and Conditions. This liability includes all claims, demands, losses, causes of action, damage, lawsuits, judgments, including lawyers' fees and costs, arising out of or relating to the activities of the User; or includes any such costs incurred in avoiding claims, demands, losses, causes of action, damage, lawsuits, judgments, including lawyers' fees and costs.
