Newspapers

A range of daily newspapers are taken in The Sir Duncan Rice Library. Most are UK based. They are retained for a few months only. Online newspapers are available from:

Lexis-Nexis
This legal database gives electronic access to an extensive range of national and regional UK newspapers over a 20 year period. Click the News tab to get to the section on newspapers. You can change the option to search all UK newspapers to, regional only, national only or broadsheets. You can also elect to search specific newspapers.

New York Times and Archive
There is some free access to the NYT from 1851- from its home page.

  • Getting to the archive is not straightforward.
  • Click on the Search button beside the empty search box below the banner headline.
  • Click on Go to Advanced Search ( top right of page)
  • If you wish to search the archive from 1981( free from 1987-), click on the Advanced button to the right of the search box.
  • If you wish to search the archive from 1851 change the option to 1851-1980.
  • Click the Search button (if you don't do this it will not accept your change).
  • Then click the Advanced button.
  • Articles are free from 1851-1923.

A number of national newspapers are also available on cd-rom though they have been superceded by Lexis Nexis above.

Older newspapers are stored electronically, on microfilm or hard copy. Many weekly and monthly magazines are available in the University Library at Per 050.

19th Century British Library newspapers
48 regional newspapers covering Britain and Ireland. The Aberdeen Journal is included.

17th & 18th century Burney Collection
The newspapers and news pamphlets gathered by the Reverend Charles Burney (1757 - 1817) represent the largest single collection of 17th and 18th century English news media. The 700 volumes of newspapers and news pamphlets were published mostly in London, however there are also some English provincial, Irish and Scottish papers, and a few examples from the American colonies, Europe and India.
