Medicine and Medical Sciences - Resources

Books

The main current book stock including pamphlets and folios is shelved on the top floor of the Medical Library. They are arranged in the Dewey classified sequence which is used throughout the University Library. The Medical Library Shelving Guide  is a useful subject guide. Paper copies of this guide are also available in the library.

Double folios are shelved in the reference section on the first floor and may be borrowed.

The Ground Floor contains all older book material. Material published from 1920 is on open access. Medical Directories, Medical Registers and the audio-visual collection (tapes and slides) are shelved at the end of the book section on this floor. Material published before 1920 is kept in locked stacks - please ask staff to bring this material to you. Material kept in locked stacks is usually for reference only - applications to borrow can be made but each request will be considered individually and, for the security and preservation of the material, may not be granted.

Reference Books
Reference books are shelved on the first floor; this includes Current Electives and MSc thesis. These items cannot be borrowed but may be consulted in the library.

Heavy Demand Collection
The Heavy Demand collection is shelved on the first floor of the library. The material in Heavy Demand is mainly books on the lecturer’s recommended reading list.

Journals

Journals are shelved in alphabetical order on the ground floor and second floor of the library. Journals from 1995 onwards can be found on Floor 2, and pre 1995 journals are on the Ground Floor. The journals are issued on 24 hour loan and may be renewed by phone.  The current week’s arrivals are kept on the current display stand on Floor 2 and are for consultation only.  The current year’s journals are stored in cupboards on the right hand side of Floor 2 with the most recent issue on display on the front of the cupboard. Medical journals have a Shelfmark beginning F Per 610.

We subscribe to a large number of full-text e-journals in this subject area. An alphabetical list is available via MetaLib.
