Law - Books, Journals and Other Resources

The Law Collection in the Taylor Library is arranged in 6 main sections:

  • Heavy Demand Books
  • Law Reports
  • Legal Journals
  • Statutes
  • Law Reference
  • Law Books

Primo contains the titles and publication details of all items held in the Taylor Library and other library sites. When you find a title on Primo, the information you need to locate the item on the shelves is given as a Call Number (Shelfmark). This tells you which one of the six sections listed above to go to and, if the item is a book, the precise shelfmark.

Books

The vast majority of books in the Law Library will have a number beginning 34, the classification number for law.  The main Law sequence runs from 340-349 on the upper level (level 2) of the library in Block C. Books with other numbers will appear in the normal numerical sequence before or after the main law sequence. For example forensic medicine has the number 614.1 and will come after all the 34 books whilst Ethics is at 170 and books are shelved before the 34 books. Books on course reading lists have been extracted from this sequence and shelved in the Heavy Demand section downstairs. The signs on the ends of the shelves help to locate each subject area.

The main divisions are:

SubjectShelfmark
General topics, Jurisprudence and Roman Law 340
International Law, including EU law 341
Constitutional and Administrative law 342
Military law, public finance and trade 343
Social law 344

Journals

These are shelved in alphabetical order by title in a sequence running down the left hand side of the lower level (level 1) in both C & D blocks of the library. Older parts may be borrowed and staff will advise on loan periods. Current parts are kept on the display stand near the Issue Desk and are for reference use only.

Ask at the Help Desk for more information on how to trace journal articles on a legal topic.

Law Reports

The collection of case reports is shelved in alphabetical order by title down the right hand side of the lower level (level 1) of the library in both C & D blocks. Current parts of the Law Reports are on the display stand near the Issue Desk. Ask at the Help Desk for more information on the library's holidings and how to trace individual case reports.

Names of Law Journals and Law Reports are often abbreviated. For help in tracing these use the library guide to Common Legal Abbreviations.

Statutory material

This section, on the far right hand side of the  lower floor of D Block, contains sets of Acts and Statutory Instruments of the United Kingdom Parliament and Acts of the Scottish Parliament. You will also find the early Acts of the Scottish Parliaments before the Union with England, reprints of early English statutes and Local and Personal Acts in this section.
