Scotland's People
The official government source of genealogical data in Scotland. A fee paying site, this gives access to statutory records of births(1855-1902), deaths(1855-1952) and marriages (1855-1927). Also access to Old Parish Registers for the years preceeding official registration in 1855. Census data is available for the years 1881, 1891 and 1901.

GENUKI
UK and Ireland geneaological information. A good place for the beginner to start. Has a wealth of information to lead users in the right direction for researching ancestors.

Scottish Documents
A searchable index of over 520,000 Scottish wills and testaments, covering years from 1500-1902. Downloads of individual items cost £5. However as this project is a rolling programme not all are yet available online.

Family Search
Via the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, this is home to the freely searchable International Genealogical Index. Worldwide records pre-official registration.

RootsWeb
A huge collection of user-submitted records. Good for mailing lists and message boards for surnames, geographic regions etc.
