Due to the interdisciplinary nature of Visual Culture, relevant material can be found throughout library collections, e.g. Art History: 709, Modern Thought (e.g. modern French philosophy: 194.9), Museum Studies: 069, Anthropology: 301, Scientific Imaging (e.g. optical engineering: 621.36), Media 302.23, and Computing, e.g. 006. To find the location of these collections, it is usually most effective to search Primo.
Search the eBook database for film & visual culture material via Ebrary. "Sign in" in order to be able to print up to 40 pages per book, save highlights and notes and store books on your personal bookshelf.
Full details of all available journals, in both print and electronic format, can be found using Primo. Access to electronic content is restricted to staff and students. E-journals can also be browsed and accessed here.
Printed Film journals are arranged alphabetically on Floor 2 of The Sir Duncan Rice Library, with the shelfmark Per 790. Issues that are shelved in closed access stores can be requested via the library catalogue. Some titles such as Sight & Sound are available full-text via Art & Architecture Complete.
Film DVDs are located in the Heavy Demand Collection on Floor 1 of The Sir Duncan Rice Library. They are arranged by country. Please note that some film DVDs are not in UK format and may not work on your home machine. Triple standard and multi-region machines which play UK, US and European formats are available in the Multimedia Room on Floor 1 of The Sir Duncan Rice Library.
DVDs and videos are normally for 3 day loan. Those needed for course work, however, may only be borrowed for 3 hours. Please note that to use a library Video/DVD player you must also go to the Desk and book with staff.
Newspapers provide a useful source of film reviews. Full-text daily newspapers including the New York Times are available on cd-rom on Floor 1 from 1988-2000. Lexis Nexis provides full-text access to many UK national and regional newspapers. Within this legal database there is a section on news which gives access to an impressive listing of local and national UK newspapers going back to the mid 1990s. From the main screen select the News option and then Simple search. You can search by UK publications, UK newspapers or UK national newspapers. Earlier Newspaper resources are on microfilm, again on Floor 1 of The Sir Duncan Rice Library.
