The Scientist and Engineer's Guide to Digital Signal Processing
Dr. Steve Smith offers his book about digital signal processing (DSP) free, in its entirety, on this site. The DSP guide introduces the reader to the fundamentals, and then delves into digital filters, applications, and complex techniques. All 33 chapters can be downloaded individually or as a whole. The book is quite well written, with plenty of figures, graphs, and illustrations that accompany the text. Smith derives equations for topics such as Fourier and Laplace transforms, and he clearly defines the terms and how to use them. This book is excellent for college students in a DSP or signals communications course.

Engineering Statistics Handbook
Developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the Engineering Statistics Handbook is a massive resource for applied statistics methods and probability. The online publication covers a wide range of topics, with the intention of helping engineers and other professionals incorporate statistical techniques into their analysis and designs. It was originally aimed at workers in the semiconductor industry, but has grown to accommodate a much broader audience. Some of the handbook uses a software tool called Dataplot, which is a free, multi-platform scientific visualization system that can be downloaded directly from NIST.

MATLAB Help Desk
MATLAB is a powerful, widely used tool for mathematics and technical computing, but its sheer size and number of features can be daunting. The MATLAB Help Desk, offered by the University of California at San Diego Center for Coastal Studies, provides extensive documentation and guides to assist users. Several online manuals, which describe everything from basic usage to graphics and built-in toolboxes, can be downloaded. Documentation is also available for writing programs in C and Fortran to interact with MATLAB. A handy search tool allows users to enter a function name and receive information about its syntax and usage.

From the Online Interactive Books and Database Web site Knovel comes the Smithsonian Physical Tables 9th Edition. "Originally published by the Smithsonian Institution Press, this classic reference source comprises 901 tables of general interest to scientists and engineers, and of particular interest to those involved with physics in its larger sense." The downloadable tables
include general physics constants, constants for temperature measurement, the blackbody and its radiant energy, temperature characteristics by material, latent heat, thermal properties of gases, acoustics, geomagnetism, and many more. This free service provides a wealth of important and helpful information that scientists and researchers everywhere should fully utilize.
