Webopedia
Webopedia is an online dictionary with definitions of technical terms related to computers and the Internet. It provides easy-to-understand explanations of words and phrases that sometimes sound like confusing jargon to the untrained ear. Don't know what a trojan horse is? If not, just type the words into Webopedia's search engine, and the definition will appear. The Quick Reference area has "information on common Internet and computer facts and occurrences," including a microprocessor comparison chart, list of abbreviations, and an Internet time line, among others. Webopedia is updated daily with the Term of the Day and Recently Added words.

Compendium of Best Papers
USENIX, also known as the Advanced Computing Systems Association, has compiled a list of the best papers presented over the last twelve years at its conferences and events. Anyone can download these outstanding technical papers, which won an award for "Best Paper, Best Student Paper," or Best Presentation. The documents come from both industry and academia,
and they discuss theoretical topics and applied research. Over 60 conferences are featured, and each has a specific focus, such as security, Java, and storage technologies. It is especially interesting to note how the papers show the evolution in computers over the last decade.

MATLAB Help Desk
MATLAB is a powerful, widely used tool for mathematics and technical computing, but its sheer size and number of features can be daunting. The MATLAB Help Desk, offered by the University of California at San Diego Center for Coastal Studies, provides extensive documentation and guides to assist users. Several online manuals, which describe everything from basic usage to graphics and built-in toolboxes, can be downloaded. Documentation is also available for writing programs in C and Fortran to interact with MATLAB. A handy search tool allows users to enter a function name and receive information about its syntax and usage.

Java Programming Tutorials
This site is much more than the name implies. In addition to an exhaustive reference on the Java programming language, other tutorials on C#, XML, Python, and JavaScript are available. The Java tutorials are divided into beginning, intermediate, and advanced sections, and sample programs and source code are provided for each topic. Users can test their knowledge of Java
by completing a series of question and answer documents. The tutorials are free to view online, but a fee is required to download them for offline viewing. Despite having a few advertisements scattered throughout the site, the site is one of the best resources available.
