AgNIC: Agricultural Network Information Center
"The Agriculture Network Information Center (AgNIC) Alliance is a voluntary alliance of land-grant university libraries and other agricultural libraries, extension services and other organizations. AgNIC focuses on providing access to quality agricultural information in electronic format available over the World Wide Web (WWW) via the Internet." It includes AgNIC, a directory of more than 1100 links to agricultural information sources; AGRICOLA, a bibliographic database of more than 3 million records; DirAgIR, an annotated directory of directories of agricultural related Internet resources; AgCal, a calendar of conferences, meetings, and seminars; and AgExp, directories of agricultural experts.

FAO Document Repository
This site from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) allows users to retrieve and view full-text documents from the FAO and related bodies. Users can search by keyword, perform an advanced search with multiple modifiers, or conduct a simple search within selected fields (note this last option is not fully functional at time of review). Search returns include title, an abstract, and a link to the full text in HTML format. Several language options are available.

The Resource Discovery Network, "a collaboration of over sixty educational and research organizations" in the United Kingdom, offers this Web site as a "collection of gateways which provide access to evaluated, quality Internet resources in the health and life sciences." BIOME facilitates Web-based research by offering a searchable catalog of Internet sites organized by field of study. The main categories include health and medicine, veterinary science, biological and biomedical science, agriculture and forestry, and natural history/ environmental science. Users may search for specific topics or browse by subject within each category. Additionally, this site provides Internet information skills tutorials tailored to each discipline. Anyone wishing to conduct Web-based research in the life sciences should find this site helpful.

The Merck Veterinary Manual
This Web site contains the online version of the Merck Veterinary Manual, provided on a not-for-profit basis by pharmaceutical manufacturers Merial and Merck and Co., Inc. This "single most comprehensive electronic reference for animal care information" covers over 12,000 veterinary topics. The scrollable table of contents and advanced search tool allow for quick access to the enormous body of information provided in this site. Users may also view detailed reference tables and over 1200 photographs and illustrations. A short video introduction and a helpful User's Guide will help users take advantage of all available features.
