Dr Adelyn Wilson joined the University in September, 2009. Her principal research interest is seventeenth-century Scottish legal history, but her research interests also include Roman law, European legal history of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and legal education. Her doctoral thesis, on the sources and method of Viscount Stair’s Institutions, can be downloaded subject to copyright here: http://www.era.lib.ed.ac.uk/handle/1842/6205. She has presented her research at conferences, seminars and other events across the UK, Europe, and in the USA. Her current research focuses particularly on the Scottish practicks of the seventeenth century.
Dr Wilson is the Director of the Civil Law Centre and the Aberdeen Roman law, Legal History and Civilian Tradition research group. She is a collaborator on the Society and Culture in the North Sea World research project. She is an associate editor of Comparative Legal History, a new journal published by Hart. She is also a member of the Stair Society, the Scottish Legal History Group, the Legal History Discussion Group, the European Society for Comparative Legal History, and the Society of Legal Scholars.
She is the co-supervisor of a doctoral candidate studying the development of law and the administration of justice in the Northern Isles in the medieval period. Dr Wilson would welcome any enquiries from persons interesting in pursuing postgraduate research in any area of Scottish legal history.
She is the course coordinator of Scottish Legal History Honours, European Legal History Honours, and Legal History in Recent Court Practice. She is the co-coordinator of Scottish Legal History Ordinary and Law of Sales Honours. She also teaches Foundations of Private Law.
She is the Convener of the Early Career Group and of a Learning and Teaching Committee working party. She is the Co-coordinator of the Baltimore Summer School and of the Law School’s pilot scheme by which local sixth-year pupils attend Foundations of Private Law. She is also a member of the Professional Education Policy Committee, Postgraduate Research Committee, the Taylor Library Committee, and the Matriculation Dinner Working Party as well as an advisor of studies for LL.B. students.
