The School of Language and Literature has two phonetics laboratory PC clusters situated in the Regent Building. One is a teaching and research cluster containing ten networked PCs, while the other is a smaller room containing five networked PCs for research use only. Both are available for use by staff and students in the School.

equipment

All phonetics laboratory cluster PCs are equipped with recent releases of speech analysis packages such as Praat, WaveSurfer, Sensimetrics Speech Station 2, and the UCL Speech Filing System for Windows suite and associated programs (RTSpect, RTGram, ESynth, ESystem, CochSim, Hearing Loss Demonstrator, WASP, etc.). Kay MultiSpeech 3700 and its sister programs are installed on the PC connected to the CSL4500 unit, and there are copies of Adobe Audition and Laryngograph's Speech Studio system on selected PCs.

We have electrolaryngography and electropalatography equipment, as well as a soundproofed recording booth with the capability of recording directly onto compact disk or solid-state recording media. Students and staff may borrow from our extensive range of recording hardware (minidisk, CD, and solid-state; microphones; headphones; still and video cameras), and from our library of speech recordings in analogue and digital formats.
