SIL Phonetics Fonts
The new Charis font (released January 2006) is available for free download to your PC here, as is the IPA93 font family Doulos, Manuscript and Sophia, and several others.Keyman
This free program makes using the IPA fonts in MS Word (etc.) much easier, and allows you to customise your computer keyboard.PhonMap
A convenient little (free) piece of software which allows you to paste strings of IPA symbols into other applications using a clickable on-screen 'keyboard' interface. PhonMap is easier and faster to use than Keyman. Only a subset of IPA symbols is available, however, and those that are shown are geared towards entering transcriptions in RP English.IPAKLICK
Hartmut Traunmüller's 'phonetic type-and-clickwriter' allowing fast and easy entry of the full inventory of symbols in IPA Unicode font (thus more flexible than Phonmap). You need to download and install SIL Unicode IPA Font Beta from here before you can use it. To open the symbol-entry interface, click on IPAKLICK at the top left of the screen.Linguist List's Fonts page
Various phonetic and language-specific fonts (Greek, Cyrillic, Japanese, etc.) for download.IPA Help
Supplies spoken examples of the International Phonetic Alphabet and word lists with language examples. From the top page click on the link under (3) IPA HELP ONLY to download the archive.Language-Master downloads
This page states: 'All downloads are fully functional, and are free for a limited evaluation period. They show all the teaching functions, but you will need to pay to access all the data.' Includes a free and very simple program called Parrot, which records and plays back in 3 second chunks, to aid with pronunciation skills.
Sound Scriber
Like a transcription machine, but with keyboard shortcuts instead of a footpedal, and all done on-screen. The adjustable playback selection and loop times help speed up audio transcription.Linguist-GRID
This is 'a free research tool that allows linguists to measure people's intuitions about language and share the collected data with other linguists', and is provided by the Department of Computational Linguistics, Copenhagen Business School.
speech analysis software
WaveSurfer
A well-designed and user-friendly piece of software from the KTH Centre for Speech Technology, Sweden.Speech Analyzer
SIL International's in-house acoustic analysis package. Fairly easy to use.SFS (Speech Filing System) packages
These packages, authored by Mark Huckvale, are downloadable free from the University College London Phonetics department website. The software available includes RTSpect (a program which allows you to display wide- and narrow-band spectrograms in real time), HearLoss (simulates various types of hearing impairment), and Enhance, which filters various types of noise out of sound files.Praat
This extremely popular package has innumerable features but is oddly designed and far from user-friendly. There are, however, several useful guides to Praat available online: Sidney Wood's tutorial is here, there's another by Pascal van Lieshout here, and further helpful information is provided by Pauline Welby here.Akustyk
Bartek Plichta's add-on to Praat. Akustyk is designed to facilitate accurate and sophisticated acoustic analysis of large data sets. Its functions range from preparing audio files for analysis to producing high quality plots and graphs. Comes with a large number of helpful multimedia tutorials.Audacity
Allows recording, playback and editing of sound files; comes with noise filter and various effects. Releases for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux/UNIX.STx Real-Time Analyser
Free trial version of the Acoustics Research Institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences' S_TOOLS-STx v.3.7.4 package. Functionality is limited as compared to the full program, but RTAnalyser allows real-time visualisation of spectra (simultaneous FFT and LPC), spectrograms and waterfall plots.
