When making a joke, the computer may have to find a word that is more general than another word. This kind of word is called a hypernym (pronounced "high-per-nim"). For example, the word "colour" is a hypernym of "red", "green", "blue", etc. The word "vehicle" is a hypernym of "car", "plane", "train", "bike", etc.
The Joking Computer uses WordNet, a database of English words developed by Princeton University.
WordNet knows about the relations between words, including which words are hypernyms of other words.
Try completing the cross-word puzzle with: 1. a hypernym of "cat" 2. a hypernym of "poodle" 3. a hypernym of "tennis" 4. a hypernym of "December" 5. a hypernym of "marmalade".
