The University of Aberdeen is an ambitious, research-driven institution. This ambition is supported by outstanding recent performance and major investment in infrastructure and student support/facilities. The results of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise demonstrated the significant volume of world leading and internationally excellent research that exists at Aberdeen across all disciplines: 89% of activity was found to be of international quality with 55% being ranked as world leading or internationally excellent.
Recent and ongoing investment in the University infrastructure includes the Aberdeen Sports Village, an outstanding new library and special collections centre, providing unparalleled facilities for our 14,500 students and 3,800 staff, and the Suttie Centre for Teaching and Learning in Healthcare. These developments have benefitted substantially from external fundraising, and Aberdeen’s Sixth Century Fundraising Campaign has attracted support of £150 million. The College of Arts and Social Science comprises over 5,000 undergraduates and 1,000 postgraduates. It is made up of six Schools (Business School, School of Education, School of Divinity, History and Philosophy, School of Law, School of Language and Literature, and School of Social Science) and two research institutions (the Research Institute for Irish and Scottish Studies and the Elphinstone Institute). Its staff and students come from all over the world and the College has a track record of excellence in research, with an environment which fosters interdisciplinary collaboration. In the 2008 RAE, six disciplines within the College were ranked amongst the top 25% in the UK and 10 had research activity rated as world leading or internationally excellent.
