Portrait of James Byres

This portrait of Byres was painted at Rome by Hugh Douglas Hamilton (1740-1808) an Irish artist who lived in Italy from 1782-91. Hamilton also painted a companion portrait of Christopher Norton, which hung in Byres' Roman apartment. Hamilton moved in Jacobite circles and painted portraits of the sons of James VIII and III, Henry Benedict and Charles Edward, and of his granddaughter the Duchess of Albany.
