- National Report - Scotland (final version)
(Bryden, J, Timm, A, Courtney, P & Atterton, J., October 2001) In
Scotland the DORA team from the Arkleton Centre investigated differential
economic performance in Orkney and Caithness in the Highlands and Islands
and Annandale & Eskdale and Wigtownshire in Dumfries and Galloway.
- National Report - Germany (final version)
(Schrader, H., Koch, B., Hachmoeller, G. & Masurek, L, October 2001)
In Germany the DORA project was carried out by the Federal Agricultural
Research Centre at the Institute of Farm Economics and Rural Studies.
The study areas were Emsland and Luechow-Dannenberg in Niedersachsen
and Ludwigslust and Uecker-Randow in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
- National Report - Greece (final version)
(Efstratoglou, S., Papadopoulos, A., Efstratoglou, A. & Kouroussi,
E., October 2001) In Greece, the DORA study was conducted by the Agricultural
University of Athens, Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural
Development. Differential economic performance was investigated in the
plains in Korinthia (Peloponnisos) and Fthiotis (Sterea Hellas). In
the mountains, Trikala in Thessaly was compared to Arkadia in the region
of Peloponnisos.
- National Report - Sweden (final version)
(Persson, L.O. & Ceccato, V., October 2001) The Swedish DORA team
was based at Nordregio, the Nordic Centre for Spatial Development. In
South-East Sweden they compared differential economic performance in
Kinda, Boxholm, ÖdeshÖg, Ydre & Aneby with that in Hultsfred
& Vetlanda. In Norra Norrland, the study area of Storuman, Sorsele
& Lycksele was compared with Överkalix Pajala & Gällivare.
- Dynamics of Rural Areas: International Comparison
(final version)
(Bryden, J. & Hart, K, November 2001) This report suggests six key
themes (derived from the national reports) which are seen to underscore
differential economic performance across the 16 study areas. These key
themes might inform a new look at policy instruments designed to foster
rural economic development. The themes are: a) Cultural Traditions and
Social Arrangements in the shift from state to market; b) Infrastructure
and Peripherality; c) Governance, Institutions and Investment; d) Entrepreneurship;
e) Economic Structures and Organisation and f) Human Resources and Demography
