New ESRC award for research into e-social science: Policy Grid II

IRR Board members Professor John Farrington and Dr Lorna Philip, with Dr Colin Hunter (also of Geography and Environment), are part of an interdisciplinary team that has been awarded a substantial grant from the Economic and Social Research Council to continue the development of the PolicyGrid Node of the National Centre for eSocial Science, which has been in operation since early 2006. The Principal Investigator for the new ‘PolicyGrid II’ award, which is worth £885,000, is Dr Peter Edwards of Computing Science.

The new research, entitled ‘Supporting Interdisciplinary Evidence Bases for Scientific Collaboration & Policy Making’, will explore the challenges surrounding the development of computational tools to support interdisciplinary research teams, e.g. those concerning human-environment interactions and the sustainability of human societies facing natural resource depletion and environmental degradation. It aims to bring together different traditional discipline-based vocabularies and to facilitate the emergence of a genuine shared language that enables new (integrated) knowledge and theories to be developed. The new project will run for three years from March 2009.
