Fifth Framework Programme

The Forestry Wood Chain (FWC) consists of forest owners, machine entrepreneurs, wood-procurement organizations, sawmills, papermills and board mills linked together through a complex production and business network. Efficient and market driven operations within this network are vitally important, particularly in the face of increasing international competition. There is a strong demand from the industry for the development of fast and accurate information flows between all the actors in the FWC. The rapid advances in information technology (e.g. Internet and wireless telecommunication) offer new opportunities to improve information management and decision support in the FWC.

Funded under the European Commission Fifth Framework, Key Action No. 5.3.2., this three year research project therefore seeks to explore the bounds of the new technology and its application in the forestry sector and aims to increase competitiveness, environmental sensitivity and employment within the European FWC.

The work is divided into five work packages: WP1) Needs Analysis, WP2) Requirements 2005, WP3) New Office Tools, WP4) Operator Support, and WP5) System Evaluation:
