Translational medicine has been defined as "research going from bench to bedside, where theories emerging from pre-clinical experimentation are tested on patients with a variety of disease conditions, and from bedside to bench, where information obtained from preliminary human experimentation can be used to refine our understanding of the biological principles underpinning the heterogeneity of human disease". We have applied a much broader definition to include application of new technologies to the diagnosis and treatment of disease and also clinical trials.

The Translational Medicine research programme commenced in May 2006 within the research programme structure of the Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS), and the Institute of Applied Health Sciences, University of Aberdeen. Although based on the Foresterhill site this programme crosses all other research programmes within the IMS, between the different colleges within the university's collegiate structure, and links with the hospitals in the Grampian region and with associated research institutions and industrial partners. Furthermore, the programme will contribute to, and play a key role in, national and international initiatives in translational medicine.

The key objectives of the Translational Medicine research programme are to:

  1. identify, integrate and make evident research in this area that is currently being undertaken,
  2. facilitate and develop further cross-disciplinary translational medicine within this area and nurture its growth,
  3. identify and facilitate the provision of the infrastructures that are necessary to undertake translational medicine research.
