A Celebration of 25 Years of Clinical MRI: September 2005
In 1980 the physicists in the Department of Biomedical Physics and Bioengineering completed construction of a whole body nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) scanner.
With the development of spin-warp imaging by Doctors J Hutchison and W Edelstein the imaging available from the new NMR scanner was good enough to recognise all the main organs of the body. In the late summer of 1980 the physicists approached Dr F W Smith, a Consultant in Nuclear Medicine at that time, to help evaluate this new scanning method. After examining a number of normal volunteers to learn the normal appearances Dr Smith started scanning patients with known diseases to see if the NMR technique would be useful. The first patient was scanned on the 26th August 1980 demonstrating that NMR could diagnose malignant tumours in the liver andbones. Over the intervening 25 years NMR (or MRI as it became known in the late 1980's) has developed into high resolution MR imaging and is now an integral part of every major diagnostic imaging department in the world.
On September 1st and 2nd 2005 at Kings College Converence Centre, University of Aberdeen, we brought together these early pioneers in this technology to celebrate the silver anniversary of the first clinical patient scanned using this technique and provide an insight into the history of MRI in Aberdeen over the past 25 years.
