The Affymetrix GeneChip Microarray platform is situated in a purpose built facility within the Institute of Medical Sciences. The Affymetrix Core Facility forms an integral part of the Core research facilities, which bring together key technologies including genomics, proteomics, metabolomics and bioinformatics, in the Institute of Medical Sciences. The Affymetrix GeneChip microarray platform has been running since December 2001 and was rehoused in its new location with the opening of Phase II of the IMS in September 2002. The bioinformatics suite was established in April 2003, providing hardware and microarray expression analysis software for users of the Affymetrix Core Facility.

The Affymetrix GeneChip Microarray platform was originally commissioned through funding from the local charity Friends of ANCHOR. The ongoing costs associated with maintenance and development of the facility are funded jointly by the University of Aberdeen Faculty of Medicine and the Oncology research group. The Affymetrix GeneChip microarray facility now serves a diverse range of research groups throughout the University of Aberdeen. Management and strategic development of the Affymetrix Core Facility is overseen by Dr Elaina Collie-Duguid, Professor Stuart Ralston, Professor Mike Greaves, Mr Dean Phillips and Professor Steve Logan. A 'Representative User Group' made up of researchers using the Microarray Centre is planned.

The facility runs Monday-Friday 9 a.m. - 5:30 p.m, and the average turnaround time for user prepared biotin-labelled cRNA preparations is 3-7 days.

The microarray facility is under the direction of Dr Elaina Collie-Duguid and samples are processed by Mrs Diane Stewart. Dr Elaina Collie-Duguid can be contacted for advice on experimental design, sample preparation and other aspects of your study.
