Next Generation Sequencing - Bioinformatics
Next Generation Sequencing has enabled sequencing of DNA at unprecedented speed and thereby has revolutionised genomics. Next-Gen technologies facilitate whole genome and transcriptome sequencing and targeted resequencing, and are applicable to a wide variety of scientific investigations. As Next-Gen sequencing projects generate hundreds of thousands to the tens of millions of reads there is a requirement for specialised bioinformatics analysis.
As part of a Scotland-wide collaboration part funded by the MRC, Aberdeen University has appointed Caroline Reiff as an Aberdeen based Bioinformatician to facilitate planning and execution of Next-Gen Sequencing projects, and to perform or assist users in performing the bioinformatic analysis of next-generation sequence data sets. Caroline is jointly appointed to the Genepool (University of Edinburgh) next generation sequencing facility team http://genepool.bio.ed.ac.uk, and brings their collective expertise to Aberdeen.
The Genepool hub in Edinburgh uses Illumina / Solexa and Roche 454 platforms to provide a collaborative cost-effective next generation sequencing service to Scottish Universities.
Caroline Reiff is based in the Polwarth Building at Foresterhill. The aim of her post is to provide collaborative bioinformatic support for Next-Gen projects at Aberdeen University and beyond regardless of the source of sequence data.
Bioinformatics support is available for a wide variety of applications including: Genome Re-Sequencing, De Novo Genome Sequencing, ChIP-Sequencing, Transcriptome Sequencing, RNA-seq, Deep-sage and can include training. Possible applications include identification of SNPs/Indels, differential Gene expression/identification of splice junctions and Microbial diversity studies. It is strongly advised that next-gen sequencing users consider need for bioinformatics support at grant application as the service is funded on a cost-recovery model.
