Musculoskeletal Programme

Research Area: Epidemiology

Chronic regional and widespread musculoskeletal pain is common. The main research focus of the Epidemiology Group, led by Professor Gary Macfarlane, is the study of the epidemiology of pain. This research programme incorporates both observational and interventional population-based studies in persons, ranging from the very young (late gestation and birth) to the very old (>100yrs).

There are three themes within the musculoskeletal programme of the epidemiology group:

  • Life course influences on the development of chronic pain in adulthood, led by Dr Gareth Jones.
  • Biological pathways linking the psychosocial environment and pain reporting, led by Professor Gary Macfarlane.
  • Musculoskeletal health (incorporating predictors of musculoskeletal health and randomised controlled trials of pain management), led by Professor Gary Macfarlane.
