Research Interests
My core research interests lie in ecology and conservation. My work has focused on long-term and large-scale field systems, using experiments to tease out the impact of population processes and land use on individual behaviour, populations and communities. Much of this work has taken place within the uplands.Within ACES we are linking natural, social and physical sciences together with policy makes and stakeholders to tackle key research questions in environmental sustainability.
Current research focuses on the following areas:
- Population dynamics
- Predation and predator management
- Hunting
- Resolving ecological conflicts

Current Research
Red grouse, parasites & territorial behaviour. One of the main challenges facing population ecology is to explain the enormous spatial and temporal variation observed in patterns of abundance.
Our Long-term harvest records of red grouse show that populations exhibit unstable dynamics with geographical variation in cycle period ranging from 2 to 15 years. Within this system there are two dominant, destabilising biotic factors: territorial behaviour and parasites. We have undertaken a range of experiments to confirm the de-stabilising role of both processes and explor how they interact. Currently, we are testing the hypothesis that interactions between parasites, territorial behaviour and climate can account for the spatial variation in the dynamical behaviour of red grouse populations. Funded by two NERC grants, this project links in with the EU Marie Curie Fellowship of Pablo Vergara and is in collaboration with Jesus Martinez, Francois Mougeot & Mohammed Zeineddine.
Rabbits, predation risk & myxomatosis.
Rabbits are considered a keystone species in their native Spain. However, over the last 50 years, populations have undergone a sharp decline, mainly as a result Myxomatosis and Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease (RHD). The decline poses potentially profound consequences for hunting practices and for the wide guild of predators that is dependent on them, including the endangered Iberian Lynx (Lynx pardinus) and the Spanish Imperial Eagle (Aquila adalberti). There is an urgent need to restore rabbit populations. Here, we seek to test the hypothesis that interactions between predation risk and disease prevent population recovery. Funded by Junta de communidades de Castilla La Mancha, with Rafael Villafuerte & Catarina Ferreira (UCLM).
Grazing and biodiversity.
In 2002 we started a grazing manipulation in the Scottish uplands, to examine the consequences of changing herbivory on vegetation dynamics and the cascading effects through upland ecosystems. We focus on developing a mechanistic understanding of how grazing affects upland birds, with meadow pipits as a model system. This work is funded by RERAD and is led by Robin Pakeman (Macaulay Institute) and is in collaboration with Darren Evans (Hull University).
Hunting for Sustainability.
HUNT is an international interdisciplinary research project, looking into the wider meaning of hunting in the 21st century. Using hunting as a lens, HUNT aims to explore general aspects of the relationship between humans and nature, seeking ways to reconcile conflicts between people over hunting practices. In Scotland we are exploring the ecological, social and economic consequences of alternative land management styles, from intensive management for grouse, to management for conservation. Funded by the EU's 7th Framework program, coordinated by Justin Irvien (James Hutton Institute).
Predation and predator management.
The impact of raptors on game has been one of the most contentious conflicts in UK conservation. I have worked on this problem since 1985, quantifying the impact of hen harriers on red grouse populations through long-term studies and exploring alternative mitigation strategies. I continue to explore how we can use robust science, stakeholder dialogue and knowledge exchange to resolve these challenging conflicts.
Conflict management. Building on the experience of many of our projects, and the cross-
disciplinary nature of ACES we are holding an international conference on Conflicts in Conservation at Aberdeen in August, 2011. The aim is to take a broad cross-disciplinary perspective and consider a variety of conflicts from around the world.
Ecocycles. Ecocyles is a European collaborative project that links science with policy to improve ecosystem conservation. Climate change and human-induced shifts in land use have caused dramatic changes in ecosystem processes and functioning across Europe. Particularly spectacular have been changing populations of keystone herbivores such as voles. This project explores how ecosystem processes are affected by the cascading effects of changing small herbivore dynamics. Ecocycles combines ecosystems in Norway, UK, France and Spain to conduct research on ecosystem processes and influential management issues. Funded by EU Biodiversa programme, PI - Xavier Lambin.
