Biography

My research interests are centred around the biological exploration of the deep sea and associated technology with an emerging interest in simulating extreme marine environments in laboratory conditions. My main focus is on exploring the Hadal Zone (6000-11,000 m). The hadal zone comprises deep trenches formed by tectonic subduction and centred mostly around the Pacific Rim. 

In 2007 I designed two hadal-rated landers, and in recent years designed and constructed another two.  These Hadal-landers  have now been deployed in the hadal trenches over 180 times over 13 cruises in seven trenches in the Pacific Ocean (Japan, Izu-Bonin, Mariana, New Hebrides, Kermadec, Tonga and Peru-Chile). Of these, over 120 deployments have been made using baited camera landers and the rest with various baited trap systems.

This work was achieved through the HADEEP 1 project (2006-2011; Nippon Foundation/NERC), HADEEP II (2010-2012; Total Foundation), HADEEP III (2012-2013; MASTS), HADEEP IV (2012-2015; Total Foundation), HADES-k (2012-2015; NSF) and HADES-m (2013-2015; SOI).  The latter two projects were an international collaboration, details of which can be found here.

I recently published a monograph on the hadal zone for Cambridge University Press that can be found here.  This book also featured an endorsement from film director and explorer James Cameron who called the book "The most comprehensive book yet written on the mysteries of the ocean's deepest places, written by one of its best explorers".

The highlights of this research so far have been unequivocally proving that decapods do exist in the trenches, filming of the deepest fish seen alive in 2008 (Click here) and again in 2014 (Click here), filming the deepest fish in the southern hemisphere (Click here), having a hadal amphipod named after me (Click here) and finding the ‘supergiant’ amphipod in trenches and the southern hemisphere for the first time (Click here). More recently I was involved in the first biological exploration of the New Hebrides Trench (Click Here) and proving that fish are biochemically constrained from reaching full ocean depth (Click here). This trench research, namely through the HADES projects, has generated incredible public interest, culminating in millions of hits on our YouTube channel featuring the latest video from the deepest depths of the Mariana Trench (Click here).

This work has also gathered significant public interest which has led to various interesting public outreach endeavours ranging from Blue Peter (Click here) to the Filmic Art 3D Deep Ocean Experience Blu-Ray DVD, and various other news and media activities (see 'further info' tab).

In recent years I have been striving to bring to the laboratory conditions we typically find in the extreme deep sea, and already I have begun construction of a new NERC-funded high-pressure facility at Oceanlab called PolyExESS (Polyextremophile Environmental Simulation System) due for completion later in 2015.
