Institute recruits two new researchers from Harvard to investigate obesity and aging in mice

Dr Nimesh Mody (left) and Dr Mirela Delibegovic

Dr Mirela Delibegovic and Dr Nimesh Mody have joined the research theme of Integrative Physiology and will work alongside Prof. John Speakman and others to further understand the molecular mechanism of obesity, aging and associated complications such type 2 diabetes.

Mirela and Nimesh return to Scotland after a 4 year spell at Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachussetts. Mirela investigated the role of the protein-tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B) in the control of body mass and glucose homeostasis in lab of Prof. Benjamin Neel. She has now been awarded a Research Councils UK Academic Fellowship which aims to aid the development of a clearer career path for contract research staff into academia (i.e. postdoc to lecturer).

Nimesh spent his time at Harvard studying the role of serum retinol binding protein in obesity and insulin resistance (two major risk factors for the development of type 2 diabetes) in the lab of Prof. Barbara Khan. He has been awarded a College-funded position to initiate an independent research career. Both Nimesh and Mirela completed their PhD’s in Dundee in the MRC Protein Phosphorylation Unit headed by Prof. Sir Philip Cohen before heading stateside in 2003.

As you may have guessed, Nimesh and Mirela are a husband and wife team, who also celebrated the birth of their first child in May 2007. Their son is busy learning about life in the University’s Rocking Horse Nursery.
