Shared decision-making is an approach that involves patients and their clinicians in working together to find the right care or treatment for an individual based on what is important to that patient, informed by relevant evidence. It is an important component of the wider field of person-centred care. Despite growing evidence that involving patients in such decisions is good for patients, clinicians and health systems, there remain significant challenges in implementing this in practice. This seminar will draw on experience of implementation of shared decision making in Newcastle and Cardiff in a Health Foundation-funded programme, MAGIC (MAking Good decisions In Collaboration). The session will be interactive. Please think in advance about experiences you or your family may have had in making decisions about treatment and care, in order to contribute to the discussion.
