Our mission is: "To improve health and health care delivery through excellence in applied health sciences research."
IAHS achieves this mission by creating a vibrant research culture that provides staff with the support and facilities required for the efficient conduct of research into the need for access to and delivery of healthcare. The research contributes locally, nationally, and internationally to the evidence base needed by individuals, health care providers, and organisations when making decisions about maximising health and optimising health care services. As well as producing high quality research findings, the Institute contributes to building capacity in health service research by providing training and development opportunities for its members. For administration purposes University employed members are based within the Division of Applied Health Sciences in the School of Medicine and Dentistry:
The Institute of Applied Health Sciences (IAHS) has an extensive member base and membership is open to anyone undertaking applied health services research, irrespective of their place of employment (e.g. University or NHS). The Division of Applied Health Sciences (DAHS) is the administrative home of University members of the IAHS.
IAHS members contribute to local, national and international R & D activities in both primary and secondary care sectors. Many researchers are members of, or referees for, prestigious grant giving bodies such as the Medical Research Council (MRC), Wellcome Trust, Scottish Chief Scientist Office, contribute to policy development bodies and are external examiners or assessors of research organisations and peer reviewers for national and international scientific journals.
Strong collaborations exist with other universities, research institutions, foundations and governments within the UK, Europe, America and more than 12 developing countries. Partnerships also exist with major international and bi-lateral agencies such as the European Union (EU), the UK Department for International Development (DFID), United Nations' Children Fund (UNICEF), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), World Bank, World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Population Council (New York). Industry-related collaborations include research projects, consultancies and membership of scientific advisory bodies.
The Institute of Applied Health Sciences (IAHS) was created in 1999 to provide critical mass in health and health services research. The IAHS, which is directed by Professor Phil Hannaford, is one of the few research institutes of the College of Life Sciences and Medicine and we have over 350 members. Current research grant holdings stand at £39 million and there are currently circa 70 PhD students. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise almost all of our research was rated as International and our Health Services Research submission was equal first in the UK.
