Biography

Zoë Skea joined the Unit as a Research Assistant in 1999. She graduated in Sociology from the University of Glasgow in 1995 and gained an MSc in Health Services and Public Health Research from the University of Aberdeen in 1999. Since joining the Unit, she has been involved in a broad range of studies with a particular focus on health care users' experiences of their own care and treatment. In 2002, Zoë was awarded a three-year research training fellowship from CSO (Chief Scientist Office, Scottish Executive Health Department). The fellowship was part of her PhD exploring communication issues in the context of the MMR vaccine controversy.  In 2008, she took up a joint appointment with HSRU and the Academic Urology Unit. She currently leads a portfolio of research investigating the information and support needs of urological cancer patients. She has wide ranging research interests in health services research with particular expertise in qualitative methodology and issues relating to patients' health care experiences.

Current Research

Since 2008, supported by an NHS Endowment committee grant, Zoë has been developing a programme of research which broadly aims to investigate the information and support needs of people with urological cancer.

Recently completed projects:

  • Enabling mutual helping? Peer support for urological cancer patients: A qualitative study.
  • 'What factors influence treatment decision making for prostate cancer?' - A meta-ethnography of couples' experiences.
  • Online information resources for people with urological cancers: website analysis and views of health care professionals.
  • Social support online: An analysis of online discussion boards for people living with urological cancer.

Collaborations

Zoë is currently collaborating on an international research project looking at ethical issues in cluster randomised trials (funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research). This project is being led by Dr Monica Taljaard and Professor Jeremy Grimshaw at the Ottawa Health Research Institute, University of Ottawa. Zoë has been assisting in data abstractions for the systematic review components of this project, and is currently directly involved in the design and development of the various qualitative components of this study.

Zoë is also an advisory panel member for a multi-centred study investigating the health care experiences of men with penile cancer (funded by the Research for Patient Benefit Programme of the National Institute for Health Research). The findings from this qualitative in-depth interview study will result in the creation of an online information and support resource for use by patients and health care professionals (HealthTalkonline site). As well as providing important experiential information for patients, the resource can also facilitate the learning of effective and appropriate communication skills by health professionals in training. The project is being led by researchers from Leeds Metropolitan University, Aberystwyth University and the University of Oxford.
