Biography

Andrew Elders joined the Unit in November 2009 as a research fellow in medical statistics.  He studied mathematics and economics at the University of St Andrews and worked at the Scottish Office in Edinburgh after graduating in 1995.  In February 2001, he moved to Perth, Australia and worked as an analyst for Gee-Woolhouse before returning to the UK to join the Information and Services Division (ISD) of NHS National Services Scotland in September 2002.  Andrew took a 2-year secondment to NHS Fife in 2006 as a senior statistician in the public health department before moving to the Health Intelligence Unit in NHS Lothian in 2008.  He graduated with an MSc in Applied Statistics from Napier University in 2007.  As a member of the statistics team in HSRU, Andrew mainly works on the design and analysis of clinical trials and conducts meta-analyses for systematic reviews.

Research Interests

Research interests include methodologies for randomised control trials, medical record linkage, quality improvement and analysis of complex sample survey data.

Current Research

  • FOCCUS: Pragmatic multi-centre randomised controlled trial of routine postoperative ICU care and / or pre-operative fluid loading in high-risk surgical patients undergoing major elective and urgent surgery.
  • eTHoS: Pragmatic multicentre randomised controlled trial comparing stapled haemorrhoidopexy to traditional excisional surgery for haemorrhoidal disease.
  • CLaSS: Randomised controlled trial comparing foam sclerotherapy, alone or in combination with endovenous laser therapy, with conventional surgery as a treatment for varicose veins.
  • PROSPECT: Clinical and cost-effectiveness of surgical options for the management of anterior and/or posterior vaginal wall prolapse:  two randomised controlled trials within a Comprehensive Cohort Study. 
  • ProLong: The relationship of pregnancy and delivery with incontinence and prolapse.
  • TRiaDS: Translation research in a dental setting.
  • IQuaD: Improving quality in dentistry - randomised controlled trial.
  • Surveillance for Ocular Hypertension: Systematic review of the reliability and agreement between alternative tonometers for ascertaining and monitoring ocular hypertension.
  • Indirect comparison of relative effectiveness of ranibizumab and bevacizumab in diabetic macular oedema.
  • Network meta-analysis of insulin treatments for Type II diabetes.
  • Appraisal of denosumab for the treatment of bone metastases from solid tumours and multiple myeloma.
  • Appraisal of pazopanib for the first-line treatment of patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma.
  • Study of the effects on short and long term outcomes of the treatment of severe sepsis with activated protein C.
