Biography
After working for over 10 years as a NHS consultant ophthalmologist, in July 2010 I was appointed Professor and Chair at the Health Services Research Unit (HSRU) of the University of Aberdeen.
My clinical areas of interest are glaucoma and cornea. My academic career is focused in trying to improve patient care, finding out whether new developments (e.g., treatments, diagnostic technologies) are effective and efficient, and evaluating new models of eye care. I am principal investigator of two ongoing large projects: an international multicentre randomised controlled trial (RCT) comparing treatments for primary angle glaucoma (EAGLE, funded by the MRC) and a multicentre glaucoma diagnostic study (GATE, funded by the NIHR-HTA Programme).
In the past 3 years I raised over £3 million (over £2 million as principal investigator) for eye research from publicly funded organisations. I have published over 120 peer-reviewed papers, written 17 book chapters, and edited 3 books.
I am the 2012 Chair of the UK & Eire Glaucoma Society (UKEGS). In 2008 I received American Academy of Ophthalmology achievement award. I am member of the Editorial Board of seven specialist journals and of the Scientific Committee of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, and I am frequently invited to participate in national and international conferences.
