Review Body for Interventional Procedures (ReBIP)
Summary
The Review Body for Interventional Procedures (ReBIP) is a joint venture between the Health Services Research Unit and Health Services Research at the University of Sheffield. ReBIP supports the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) Interventional Procedures Programme (IPP). An interventional procedure is a procedure that is used for diagnosis or treatment that involves incision, puncture or entry into a body cavity, or the use of ionising electromagnetic or acoustic energy. The Interventional Procedures Advisory Committee (IPAC) is responsible for advising NICE on the safety and efficacy of interventional procedures. When IPAC considers that there is uncertainty regarding the safety and efficacy of a procedure, and usage is likely to become significant, ReBIP may be commissioned to undertake a systematic review of the evidence. ReBIP also advises IPAC on the use of data from registers and may be involved in the setting up and analysis of datasets used to assess specific procedures. In addition ReBIP also provides methodological advice to IPAC.
Recent systematic reviews include:
- Systematic review of the efficacy and safety of using mesh or grafts in surgery for uterine or vaginal vault prolapse;
- Systematic review of the efficacy and safety of using mesh or grafts in surgery for anterior and/or posterior vaginal wall prolapse; and
- Systematic review of the safety and efficacy of foam sclerotherapy for venous disease of the lower limbs.
Recent registers include:
- Uterine Artery Embolisation for Fibroids. On behalf of ReBIP, HSRU facilitated a web-based register for data collection on all women undergoing this procedure in the UK. http://custompages.webges.com/bsir/. The database is now closed for entering new records although follow-up data are still being collected and entered.
