Postgraduate opportunities

In pursuit of our remit to train people in health services research, HSRU provides a number of postgraduate opportunities:

MSc

HSRU contributes courses to the MSc in Health Services and Public Health Research and the MSc in International Health.

PhD

We provide supervisory support for full or part-time PhD students.

Staff in HSRU are encouraged to supervise PhD students.   Examples of recent PhD topics include factors that limit participation in trials, analysing missing data in trials and the use of patient reported outcomes in glaucoma trials.

Research Fellowships

Clinical

HSRU actively mentors NHS Research Scotland (NRS) fellowships. Three newly appointed NRS Clinical Fellowships commenced in April 2013.  These are:

  • Geospatial Evaluation of Systems of Trauma Care for Scotland - Mr Jan Jansen, Consultant Surgeon, NHS Grampian.
  • Improving Diabetes Management Through Using Information technology - Dr Sam Philip Consultant Diabetologist, NHS Grampian.
  • The application of psychological interventions (including mindfulness based approaches) to health and illness - Dr Andy Keen, Consultant Clinical Psychologist, NHS Grampian.

Non-clinical

HSRU actively encourages the development of staff through seeking prestigious research fellowships. Several funded research fellowships are supported including for example topics on the use of decision aids in trials, surgical trial methodology and optimising caseload management.
