International Leadership Development Programme
WINNER OF THE TIMES HIGHER AWARD 2007

Summary
Target Audience: Senior Academic and Administrative Leaders.
Group: 18 participants.
Aim
The overall aim of the programme is to further enhance the operational and strategic leadership skills of the participants on the programme, and in the process enable the implementation of some of the institution's strategic goals.
Benefits
The benefits of the programme to the institution include;
- responding to the challenge of succession planning through the development of a potential cadre of future strategic leaders,
- the building of a network which will help foster long-standing relationships between senior staff across the institution,
- the development of links, nationally and internationally, with partners and other organisations
- an opportunity to discuss and embed a number of institution-wide aspects of the institutional plan, and
- the creation of a cohort of leaders who can act as role models and change agents for the leadership capabilities required for the university.
Outcomes
By the end of the programme, participants will have:
- an enhanced understanding of the leadership skills required to be an effective senior manager in a higher education institution,
- through the use of a number of diagnostic questionnaires, including the use of 360 degree feedback process, a heightened sense of self-awareness about their own leadership, communication and decision-making style,
- an increased capacity to assess the strategic issues facing higher education institutions and Aberdeen University,
- by visits to external organisations undergoing periods of rapid change, a greater awareness of the processes required to effectively manage and lead change and an increased understanding of the manner in which others are facing the process of managing change,
- a wider appreciation of the commercial and financial skills required to manage in an increasingly business-oriented approach to the delivery of higher education,
- by visits to international partners and other relevant organisations, to gather market intelligence and experience of leadership practice in a different cultural context,
- developed a greater awareness of good practice in people management,
- through the use of action learning sets, an increased understanding of the experience and skills of other senior colleagues and development of practical steps to help lead major change projects.
Approach
The programme combines the following approaches and:
- Is focused on personal, team and organisational development.
- Combines both 'taught' and 'experiential' approaches.
- Involves the participants in the process of design.
- Combines internal and external facilitators/presenters,
- Is linked to the strategic objectives of the Institution, particularly in relation to the internationalisation of the institution's activities, entrepreneurial development, and international benchmarking,
- Involves a high level of team working (using action learning) to support the development of the individuals.
- Uses 360 degree review and other diagnostic processes to develop increased self awareness and understanding.
- Will use practical case studies throughout.
- Will require participants to undertake preparatory work before some of the sessions.
Facilitators
The programme will involve a number of facilitators and speakers. The Programme Director will be Dr Tom Kennie, a founding director of the Ranmore Consulting Group. Tom has considerable knowledge of leadership in an HE context and has for the past 7 years been co-director (with Professor Robin Middlehurst) of the Leadership Foundation for the HE 'Top Management Programme' (TMP). In addition David Wagstaff, a Senior Associate of Ranmore Consulting will also contribute to the programme. David also contributes to the TMP. Biographical details for both can be found below.
