All members of staff have the right to belong to a Trades Union of his/her own choice or to belong to no Trades Union.
Academic and Academic-Related Staff
The University of Aberdeen recognises the University & College Union (UCU) as the appropriate body for the purposes of consultation and negotiation on the terms and conditions of employment of all staff employed at Grade 5 and above, including employed post graduates. The UCU has undertaken to consult the BMA on matters affecting medically qualified staff.

A Procedure Agreement also exists between the University of Aberdeen and College Union and the University Court.
Secretarial, Technical and Support Staff
The University of Aberdeen has recognised UNISON as the appropriate Trades Union for consultation on collective issues affecting Secretarial and Support Staff (other than for those matters negotiated between UCEA and UNISON at national level).

University of Aberdeen Rowett Institute of Nutrition and Health
Following the merger of the University with the Rowett Research Institute to form the University of Aberdeen Rowett Institute of Nutrition and Health, the University formally recognised the Prospect Trade Union in respect of the RINH staff who transferred to the University upon merger.
