Undergraduate Courses - 1st year Courses

No formal pre-requisites are set for entrance into HA1004 and HA1504. Teaching for HA1004 and HA1504 consists of two one-hour lectures and weekly tutorials based closely on the subject matter of the lectures. Teaching for HA1505 consists of one 1 hour lecture on alternate weeks, four 1 hour local trips on Wednesday afternoons, one Saturday fieldtrip to Edinburgh.

Level 1 and Level 2 lectures and trips (but not tutorials) may be attended by students taking the University Open Lectures

Greek vaseHA1004 - Introduction to Art History

  • Designed to cater for students who have never studied History of Art before, but also to be challenging to those who have already encountered the subject
  • Offers a broad introduction to the history of architecture, painting, sculpture and the decorative arts from Antiquity to the early nineteenth century.
  • Provides vital guidance in the techniques of art.
  • Introduces the methods of academic art-historical study.

IMAGES/FROSTHA1506 - Modern Art

  • Covers the period from the mid-nineteenth century to the present.
  • Charts the changing role of the artist.
  • Examines the relationship between the artist and society in a time of great social, political and economic change.
  • Discusses the emergence and development of Modernism in Western art.
  • Course includes compulsory tutor-led fieldtrip to Aberdeen Art Gallery.

History of Art Building, King's CollegeHA1505 - In the Flesh: Art on Location

This course can only be taken together with HA1004 OR HA1506

  • Course organised around 4 Wednesday afternoon tutor-led class visits to local sites of special art historical significance, supported by staff lectures on related topics.
  • Course includes one Saturday compulsory fieldtrip to Edinburgh.

Assessment at Level 1

One essay is written for each course and fortnightly computer assignments. These constitute 50% of the overall course mark. Students sit a 2 hour slide examination for each course. This carries 50% of the overall course mark. Each course is worth 15 credits.
