Research Interests

My area of specialization is contemporary art from Eastern Europe and Russia from the second half of the 20th century. For the past several years, my research has been focused on performance artists in Russia, Latvia and Poland from the late communist and early post-communist periods (roughly 1980 to the present). My approach is mainly socio-historical, and I am interested in expanding our understanding of the genre of Performance Art in light of this artistic production from the "East."

Current Research

I am currently working on a monograph that will present a comprehensive history and analysis of performance art in Central and Eastern Europe. My most recent book, Performing the East: Performance Art in Russia, Latvia and Poland since 1980, is forthcoming with IB Tauris (2013). I have also just completed a monograph on Latvian painter and performance artist Miervaldis Polis, entitled Painting as Performance (Neputns).

As part of the assessment for HA3074: From Gulag to Glasnost: Modern Russian Art, students create a poster advertising the University of Aberdeen utilising the style and approach evident in Soviet avant-garde posters. Then, they create an exhibition of those posters that is put on display at the University. This is an article from the Evening Express featuring the poster exhibition that took place in 2011-2012.
