Art & Identity

 26-27 June 2008

Call for papers

Papers are welcomed from Postgraduate students who are interested in the representation of cultural, national and/or local identity in the visual arts of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. We invite studies on how politics and religion shaped the form, style and iconography of fresco cycles, altarpieces, panel paintings and/ or sculptural commissions. The conference proposes to examine how these commissions influenced rituals and practices that affirmed the interests and aims of a society or a group.

We will also consider papers that address:

  • the visual arts as an expression of feelings, behaviour, customs and traditions.
  • artistic identity, authorship and attribution
  • modes of representation

Proposals should not exceed 250 words for a 20 minute paper.

Deadline for submission is 28th March 2008.
