Teaching and Assessment - Undergraduate Study
At levels 1 and 2 teaching involves three one-hour lectures per week and a weekly hour-long tutorial. All courses are assessed by examination and continuous assessment. At the Honours levels classes are either seminar-based (with two weekly meetings, each lasting two hours) or lecture-based (normally with three weekly lectures and a weekly tutorial). Courses are assessed by one of three mechanisms: examination alone; continuous assessment alone; or by a combination of examination and continuous assessment. In addition to formal classes students are encouraged to undertake further reading. Bibliographies are provided for this purpose, and in addition the Faculty Librarian introduces students to relevant bibliographical search tools on CD-ROM and the World Wide Web, as well as to more traditional printed guides. Many courses are also supported by web-based material, which includes background information, and in some instances extensive primary source material.
The Department encourages students to take part in student exchange programmes. These are usually undertaken in the third year of study, and in 1999-2000 some students spent the whole year, or part of it, at Trinity College Dublin, the University of Amsterdam, the University of Barcelona and the University of Illinois. Another group attended an intensive twoweek course at the University of Ghent in Belgium. We have close links with many other universities in the United States and in Germany and Scandinavia.
