Exploring
the 17th Century Archaeology and History of Dunnottar Castle
We
had good fun at Dunnottar Castle. We learned about the history from
Jane and we found a secret tunnel that went under a wall. There was
a gravestone that we couldn't read so we rubbed grass on it and it
said 'Here lyes a bairn aged 9 - 1682'

Encounter
with a Covenanter
At one of our meetings we had a visit from a covenanter expert called
Stuibheart (the Gaelic spelling of Stuart). He brought along with
him some 17th century clothes and I tried on one of his covenanter
jackets. We all thoroughly enjoyed the visit and also got to try out
some swords and a dagger and we held 2 muskets (they were really heavy!).

Archaeological
Conservation
We
got to smash up a pot and put it back together again. I found this
a bit difficult!!! We also went on a tour of the Museum's Conservation
Lab with conservator, Margot Wright. It was really good fun and she
showed me and all the other members a mummified Egyptian cat. I really
enjoyed it.

Archaeologist@Aberdeen Open Day 2004
(part of Scottish Archaeology Month)
There
was over 500 people turned up for our Open Day. I showed people how
to grind corn as they would have done in the Iron Age. We also showed
people how to sort archaeological finds, told them about coins, handed
out leaflets and counted how many people there were.

Walking
the Deeside Railway Line
Along
the path of the old railway line, we saw lots of clues that told us
what it used to be. We saw things like old sleepers being used for
fencing and old metal railway bridges. It was really interesting to
see how we can tell a railway was there.
