Postgraduate Certificate in Health Economics - Distance Learning

This course is aimed at individuals who want to familiarise themselves with the methods used by health economists to aid the allocation of scarce health care resources. No experience of economics is necessary. The course will help you understand what health economics can contribute to decisions over the allocation of scarce resources, the techniques available for use within an economic evaluation, and the input health economics can provide answers to broader questions concerned with the provision and financing of health care. You will become familiar with the different health economic approaches to informing decisions, as well as the appropriateness of the different approaches in different context.

HERU is the main centre of health economics research in Scotland and since its inception in 1977 it has become an internationally acknowledged centre of excellence. We have over 30 years experience in running courses for the distance learner. Senior Staff at HERU have contributed to writing the course material and take part in teaching the course. Students have praised our experienced tutors, teaching styles and many students comment on the satisfaction of feeling part of a community.

The course runs from 1st October 2012 until 31st May 2013, during which time all four modules can be completed.  The course is split into 4 modules, you have the option of taking all four modules in one year, or over subsequent years. For each module students from the UK are required to attend a seminar (this is included in the fee). All seminars are two day events and take place in October, December, February and April). These seminars are held in Edinburgh. Students from outside the UK do not have to attend these seminars, but arrangements can be made if they want to. All students are required to submit a written assessment for each module. For more details please contact Lesley Innes, email: l.innes@abdn.ac.uk
