Christoph Kronenberg is a Research Fellow in the Health Policy Team at the Centre for Health Economics, University of York. His research focuses on mental health, currently analysing whether better quality of primary care influences admissions and health outcomes for people with serious mental illness using linked administrative data covering the full patient care pathway.
Title: The long-term effect of education on adult mental health.
Abstract: This paper focuses on the long-term mental health effects of education. The positive association between education and health outcomes is well established. However, whether this association is causal is still under debate. The focus in the literature so far has been on the link between education and mortality, physical health and health behaviours. This is the first paper to extensively focus on the link between education and a comprehensive number of mental health measures. The paper exploits the raising of the school leaving age in England and Wales from 14 to 15. Furthermore, the paper explores whether a 10-year delay in the same policy in Northern Ireland created a valid control group for fuzzy Difference-in-Differences studies.
