Generous donors enable a new scholarship in memory of a much-loved University luminary.
A new scholarship is being established in memory of Professor I Howard Marshall thanks to an anonymous donation of £10,000. It is now hoped that this support will be augmented to enable the University to offer a full PhD scholarship in Divinity bearing the name of the much-loved and respected man who inspired generations of students and colleagues during a 35 year career.
Professor Marshall was Professor Emeritus of New Testament Exegesis and a University of Aberdeen man through and through. He undertook both his undergraduate degree and PhD here before teaching and supervising from 1964 until his retirement in 1999. Even after retirement he continued to take a very active role in research and academic activity.
Internationally regarded as one of the leading biblical scholars of the 20th century, he was also a kind, gentle and humble man whose support and friendship touched the lives of all with whom he came into contact.
Professor Grant Macaskill, Kirby Laing Chair of New Testament Exegesis at the University said "We are delighted that the Professor I Howard Marshall Scholarship fund has been established and will, over time, continue to support doctoral research in New Testament at the University of Aberdeen. Howard's impact on New Testament scholarship was enormous and far-reaching; many of the leading figures in Christian education today studied with him and his wisdom helped to shape their academic development. It is fitting that the legacy of this important, yet humble scholar should be remembered with a scholarship fund that bears his name."
Professor Marshall passed away in December 2015 and we are honoured to establish this scholarship in memory of a genuinely loved and respected friend, teacher and colleague.
